motorcycle full of explosives into police headquarters. it happened in the eastern city of khost. four police officers were killed in the blast and three other people. this is latest attack as the u.s. marks 2,000 soldiers killed in afghanistan since the start of the war in 2001. on saturday, a soldier was shot and killed during a gun fight with afghan soldiers. three were killed, four others hurt in a drone strike in pakistan. it happened in the town of mir ali in waziristan. that region is known for hiding several several terrorist groups. shortly after 10:00 last night, a call for shots fired near new york avenue and north capitol street. when they arrived, they found a woman shot in the arm and a man

shot in the leg. both were alert and breathing. they were taken to a nearby hospital and expected to be okay. no word on if the shooter has been identified. today a controversial coal fired power plant in alexandria will close. the gen on plant on north 49th street. gen on will get back $32 million that the city held in escrow to use for environmental controls under an agreement signed in 2008. alexandria mayor bill euille says the city hopes to develop the site into retail and commercial space. occupy d.c. is back, and it could cause problems for your morning commute. today marks one year since protesters set up camp at mcpherson square. they're planning two events today that's expected to snarl traffic. they're targeting "k" street because it's home to many top

lobbyists. the nationals will take another shot at clinching the east division today. they couldn't seal the deal yesterday. so the nationals magic number remains at one. they could also clinch the division if atlanta loses tonight. the braves play pittsburgh. >> it might be a nice thing to clinch it at home, right? that would be the place to be. >> for sure. 4:31 is our time right now. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein is back, rested from a little time off. good to see you, sir. >> thank you. and both the phillies and nationals may lose tonight because rain may be moving in. we might have rain delays or may even postpone the game. it's going to be moving in tonight. between now and then, the first thing we have to deal with, cool temperatures. look at this, we're down into the 40s much of the region this morning. mid and upper 40s much of maryland and northern virginia. closer to washington. right now low to mid-50s. reagan national at 55.

southern maryland and near the bay in the 50s. these are the latest visibilities, down to just .3 mile in many locations in the mountains, panhandle of west virginia, and maryland. closer to washington, visibility not too bad. just a little patchy fog around. it's going to be with us the next couple of hours. the overnight rain is gone, going to be replaced by high clouds moving in ahead of some rain, more rain moving in from south western virginia and south of kentucky, the tennessee valley. that's going to be sweeping our way but not until tonight. between now and then, hour by hour, you'll be dealing with patchy fog in the morning, 6:00 a.m. noon time, low to mid-60s. by 3:00 p.m., a little cloudy getting home from work and school. shouldn't have trouble weather-wise. then back down to the mid-60s tonight. this evening we'll have the rain begin to move into the metro area from the south. a look at your first 4 traffic this morning with danella.

good morning. >> good morning, tom. great to have you back. let's move over to the roadways. if you're driving the beltway, still have in work zones set up. on the inner loop of the beltway between i-66 and 7, it looks to be gone because i'm not seeing any delays in that area. also to the inner loop, if you're trying to access route 236, construction taking place on the ramps to and from 236 to the inner loop, and you're not going to be able to use that for some time. that should be wrapping around 5:00 a.m. and on i-95 northbound, still seeing some delays. paving project, one lane getting by in between 3 and route 17 where you're seeing your delays. it was on north and south. south looks good, but north still seeing volume in that area. aaron and angie, back over to you. president obama appears to be winning where it matters most. aittle more than five weeks before the election, he leads mitt romney by two percentage points among likely voters nationwide. that's according to the latest

washington post/abc news poll. the president leads his republican rival by 11 points among likely voters in swing states. that includes virginia, ohio, and florida. the president is taking a break from campaigning today to prepare for the first presidential debate on wednesday in denver. he's prepping in nevada, where he held this rally last night. he told supporters there in las vegas he hopes the debate serves as a conversation about what needs to be done to keep the country growing. the president will return to the campaign trail later this week. he is scheduled to visit fairfax county on friday. mitt romney heads to denver today. the republican presidential nominee will hold a rally there this evening as he prepares for wednesday's debate. his campaign is hoping the debate gives romney a much needed boost given recent polls. new jersey governor chris christie calls it, quote, the restart of this campaign. romney's running mate paul ryan will get ready for his own

debate by hunkering down in virginia. still unknown where he'll setting up that camp. his debate with vice president joe biden is set for thursday, october 11th, in kentucky. advisers for ryan are already downplaying expectations, calling vice president biden one of the most experienced debaters in politics. today vice president biden will visit the pentagon to recognize a vehicle that has saved countless lives in iraq and afghanistan. they are called mine resistant, ambush protected vehicles, and they protect service members from hidden roadside bombs. as a senator, biden pushed for the development and use for the vehicles because of the high number of service members being killed by hidden bombs. 4:35 is our time. this week marks ten years since the beginning of the beltway sniper attacks that paralyzed our area. now lee boyd malvo is opening up and goiapologizing for his acti. malvo spoke of the attacks that injured ten and killed three

others over a three-week span in 2002. right now he's serving a life sentence without parole in a virginia prison. in the interview, malvo was remorseful, and he took responsibility for his actions. >> i am sorry. i am sorry, and it sounds -- there is no way to express -- there is no way to express that. i mean, what am i going to tell them? i'm sorry i murdered your only child. i'm sorry i killed your husband. i'm sorry i murdered your wife. >> the other half of the sniper attacks, john allen muhammad, was executed in 2009. counselors will be on hand at a fredericksburg middle school this morning after an eighth grader was killed in a plane crash over the weekend. 13-year-old kyle morton and his father, 48-year-old john morton, died saturday when their cessna plane crashed into a trailer park shortly after takeoff from shannon airport. the national transportation safety board is at the crash site trying to figure out what

happened, but people on the grnd say they heard the engine stall in midair. >> you heard the engine, then you didn't hear -- it just like disappeared. then you heard this loud crash, trailer shook. >> neighbors say john morton had a passion for flying. he was a former marine and worked for an airline. scary moments for the orioles as they traveled to florida. there was a small fire on the team's charter flight that forced them to make an emergency landing in jacksonville last night. the team was delayed by about an hour. this came after an already exciting day for the o's. they beat the red sox 6-3 in their final home game of the season. that with a loss to the angels saturday night means the orioles are going to the playoffs for the first time since 1997. right now they are tied with the yankees for the top spot in their division. the redskins squeaked out a

win. washington redskins went down to the wire with a last second field goal deciding the game. robert griffin iii had a huge game both in the air and on the ground. the rookie qb threw for 323 yards and ran for another 43, including a touchdown. the redskins led 21-3 at one point. tampa bay clawed their way back and led by a point with less than two minutes left. redskins kicker billy cundiff, who missed three field goals earlier in the game proved to be the hero. he nailed that 31-yard field goal with almost no time left to win it for washington. >> i wanted to make sure that we got that opportunity. like it meant a lot to me to be able to have a quarterback that in the clutch is going to draw back and move the ball and get us down the field. so that way i can come back and prove to everybody the last three kicks were just a fluke. when it comes down to it and you really need a kick, you can count on me. >> that evens the redskins record at 2-2.

police identified the man they believe tried to kidnap a teenager from the silver springs mcdonald's last week. the man here is rodney mural. on friday police say he grabbed a 13-year-old boy at the mcdonald's on colesville road and tried to drag him out of the restaurant. witnesses say mural claimed he was a police officer. a security guard tried to stop him, and mural ran off. he will be arrested once he's released from the hospital.

a mother whose daughter was killed by a driver high on drugs says the punishment does not fit the crime. on friday 24-year-old carlos lucas was sentenced to serve 11 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. police say lucas was under the influence of pcp when he rear-ended a car along route 29 in gainesville in november of 2010. 20-year-old megan and 15-year-old david richardson died. megan's mother says lucas should have received the maximum sentence of 26 years. >> i'm glad he's going to get some time. i just wish it was a little bit more to make him think more clearly about what he's done. >> carlos lucas' mother said her son completed a drug rehabilitation program while behind bars. meanwhile, wines would like to establish a scholarship fund in her daughter's name. she would also like to establish

a 5k race and donate the proceeds to the fund. a man who got in a standoff with police at a virginia marina appeared in court. 44-year-old john watson was arrested saturday after a several hours long standoff at the bell haven marina in alexandria. police were called to the scene late friday for reports of shots fired. when they got there, watson jumped into a dinghy and made his way into a sailboat on the potomac. he was taken into custody on saturday. later this morning, a man suspected of shooting a security guard at the family research council will appear in court. floyd lee corkins is accuseded of walking in there and opening fire. corkins told the security guard that he didn't like the group's policies, which oppose homosexuality. the guard survived the attack and was able to restrain corkins until help arrives. the supreme court reconvenes today. the nation's highest court could

issue rulings about gay marriage, affirmative action, and voting rights in this new term. the nine justices will decide whether the defense of marriage act is constitutional. president clinton signed the law, which states the federal government will only recognize marriages between a man and a woman. the court will also hear a case that challenges whether race should be a factor in college admissions. a white student sued the university of texas after she claims she was rejected unfairly. >> there were people in my class with lower grades who weren't in all the activities that i was in who were being accepted into ut, and the only other difference between us was the color of our skin. >> the best way to get to racial diversity is to consider race in an individualized way that looks at the whole applicant. >> six of the supreme court justices attended a special mass yesterday. the traditional red mass takes place the sunday before the supreme court begins its new term. today new laws will take effect to protect victims of domestic violence in maryland.

people who have to leave their jobs because of the threat of violence will now be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits. also, judges will now have to report whether defendants have a domestically related relationship with their victims. police will use this information -- this list to monitor domestic violence offenders. also today in maryland, new scooter laws go into effect. now all scooter and moped riders have to wear a helmet and eye protection. all scooter and mopeds have to be titled and insured as well, just like cars. riders have to follow the same rules of the road that are currently in effect for bicycles, though. actor and former california governor arnold schwarzenegger's new memoir comes out today. schwarzenegger claims the book, which is called "total recall," will reveal many secrets about his life. he will be in town tomorrow to promote the book. he'll be in hamilton for the book signing. that event is sold out. the man accused of assaulting lindsay lohan in a new york city hotel room over

the weekend is out of jail. the actress tells police she and the guy were fighting over cell phone photos he took. she took the phone, and he punched, choked, and threw her to the ground. police arrested the 25-year-old, who works on capit hill for a congressman. he was charged with assault and harassment. police then dropped those charges for a lack of evidence and released him. cars are once again rolling on one of the nation's busiest highways this morning. carmageddon 2 came and went without any big problems. part of the 405 freeway was closed for major construction. drivers were warned of major backups because of the construction. l.a.'s mayor said many drivers simply stayed off the roads, making things very easy over the weekend. they did have one hiccup, though. part of the mulholland bridge, the pillar fell down on the 405. they cleaned is up really quickly. very impressed. >> 4:51 is our time. tom kierein is here with a look at the weather for today. >> beautiful weekend.

firefighters are doing their
